Yellow flag iris ‘Variegata’ brings upright leaves striped yellowish white and yellow flowers with brown veining to wet garden edges. This vigorous selection can form extensive colonies and reaches about 1–1.5 m tall and wide, so give it a generous, sunny site with reliably moist soil.
## Appearance and placement
The pale striping brightens pond margins, bog gardens, and informal borders; water irises flower in late spring and early summer. RHS guidance says they grow less vigorously in ordinary garden soil and will not thrive in dry ground or deep shade. The Variegata selection is listed among RHS Plants for Pollinators. See the [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/239073/iris-pseudacorus-marginatus/details) and [RHS guidance for irises in wet or moist soil](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/iris/wet-soil) when choosing a site.
## Maintenance
Leave room for spread and thin or divide clumps from midsummer to early autumn if they extend beyond the intended bed. Routine pruning is not required. RHS warns that the plant can become a nuisance if unmanaged and lists it as harmful if eaten; wear gloves when handling and keep plant parts away from children and pets.
