About Peregrina

Peregrina is a tropical evergreen shrub or small multi-trunked tree native to Cuba, grown for clusters of bright red or pink flowers that may appear year-round in warm climates. Its glossy, variably lobed leaves and rounded branching make it useful as a patio specimen or in a shrub border ([UF/IFAS Peregrina profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST319)). ## Seasonal Interest Flowers appear above the foliage in upright clusters, while the open, symmetrical canopy gives the plant a distinctive tropical outline. UF/IFAS reports a mature height and spread of 10–15 feet and lists the species for USDA zones 10B–11. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil; full sun supports the strongest flowering. Once established, it tolerates drought, although regular water during establishment helps it settle in. It can be grown as a container specimen or trained as a shrub, espalier, or single-trunked small tree ([UF/IFAS growing notes](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/trees-and-shrubs/shrubs/jatropha/)). ## Maintenance Prune to shape as needed; the species responds well to pruning. Wear protection when handling cut stems because the milky sap may irritate sensitive skin. Seed capsules contain toxic seeds, so site the plant where children cannot reach them.
