Slender Joey is a slow-growing, solitary palm with no visible trunk and a crown of long, pleated, lance-shaped fronds. Singapore’s NParks profile for *Johannesteijsmannia lanceolata* records a maximum height of 3.5 metres and crown spread of 5 metres; individual leaves can reach 3.5 metres long.
## Form and placement
The glossy, undivided leaves rise and spread from a ground-level rosette, creating a dramatic tropical foliage accent. NParks describes the species as native to Peninsular Malaysia, where it grows in humid rainforest understory. Its minute white flowers have a faint, sour scent and are often partly concealed among the leaves.
## Growing conditions
Provide full or partial shade, humid air, and well-drained soil. The species prefers moderate moisture and a warm tropical climate. Keep it out of harsh direct sun and allow room for the broad crown and very long leaves; the mature spread can reach 5 metres.
## Maintenance
Keep the growing medium evenly moist without leaving roots waterlogged. Remove damaged foliage as needed, taking care around the small spines along the lower leaf margins. No USDA hardiness range is listed for this tropical species.
