Juglans microcarpa, commonly known as the little walnut, is a deciduous large shrub or small tree characterized by its broad, rounded crown and multi-branched habit. It features aromatic, pinnately compound foliage with numerous narrow leaflets that turn yellow in autumn. Native to riparian zones in the southwestern United States, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, showing remarkable drought tolerance. While its edible nuts are the smallest in the genus, they provide vital forage for wildlife. This hardy species is also valued for urban landscaping and erosion control.
