Create design onlineAbout Chandler Walnut Tree
Chandler is a named English walnut cultivar developed by the University of California and widely grown for its late-season crop. It forms a moderately vigorous, lateral-bearing tree with smooth, oval nuts and light kernels that separate readily into halves.
## Cultivar and crop
The UC Davis cultivar table describes Chandler as a strong-yielding cultivar with a relatively late harvest; Cisco, Franquette, and Fernette are listed as pollenizers. The kernels are notably light colored, while the thin shell can strengthen as trees mature. See the [UC Davis walnut cultivar table](https://fruitsandnuts.ucdavis.edu/walnut-cultivar-table) and its [UCANR cultivar description](https://ucanr.edu/sites/uclakecounty/files/158642.pdf). UCANR identifies Chandler as a University of California patented cultivar; this historical statement does not establish current patent status.
## Site and growing
Give the tree full sun and deep, well-drained soil, with generous room for its mature canopy. Consistent soil moisture supports establishment and nut production; avoid shallow, waterlogged sites. Walnuts are wind-pollinated, and a compatible variety with overlapping bloom can improve fruit set. General walnut guidance from [UC IPM](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/cultural-tips-for-growing-walnut/) and [UCANR Master Gardeners](https://ucanr.edu/node/152230/printable/print) provides further regional context.
## Maintenance
Prune during dormancy to remove dead, crossing, or crowded limbs and narrow branch unions. Chandler's strong growth can require structural pruning; preserve a sturdy framework and avoid large cuts. Keep irrigation away from the trunk, and promptly collect fallen nuts and remove diseased debris.
