About Winter Gold Chinese Juniper

Winter Gold is a golden-foliaged selection of Chinese juniper with a low, spreading habit. Nursery and arboretum records agree that the plant spreads 6–9 feet wide, while reported heights differ: Glover Nursery lists 1–2 feet and Colorado State University observed 3–4 feet in a planted specimen ([Glover Nursery](https://glovercatalog.com/product/juniper-winter-gold); [Colorado State University](https://agsci.colostate.edu/landscapeplants/wp-content/uploads/sites/57/2015/05/2016-CSU-Arboretum-Report.pdf)). ## Garden Use Give this evergreen shrub room to spread along a sunny border, slope, or open planting bed. Its fine-textured yellow-green foliage holds color through winter and changes toward green in warmer seasons. Colorado State University recorded a spreading form and 6–12 inches of seasonal growth; the wider spread makes it useful as a broad, low accent. ## Siting Plant in well-drained soil. Glover Nursery lists full sun through shade exposures, but a sunny position best supports the golden foliage. The nursery lists USDA zones 4–7 and notes greater heat tolerance than other golden forms. Avoid persistently wet ground and provide enough lateral space for the mature spread. ## Maintenance Once established, water during extended dry periods and avoid routine shearing that would remove the plant’s natural outline. Trim damaged or wayward branches selectively. Plan for a 6–9-foot spread; local growing conditions and crowding can affect the final size, as noted in the Colorado State University evaluation.
