‘Bar Harbor’ is a low, spreading cultivar of creeping juniper with evergreen, blue-green to gray-green foliage that can turn reddish purple in winter. NC State Extension lists a mature height of about 8–12 inches and a spread of 6–8 feet.
## Site and use
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. The exact cultivar profile describes tolerance of drought, heat, deer, and coastal conditions, with USDA hardiness in Zones 4b–9b. Its horizontal form works on slopes, in rock gardens, retaining walls, and along walks or patios. It is relatively open rather than tightly dense, so plan its broad spread when placing it with other plants.
## Seasonal character
The fine, scale-like foliage stays evergreen. NC State notes that summer foliage is gray-green or blue-green, with reddish-purple winter color. ‘Bar Harbor’ is typically male, so berry-like cones are not a dependable feature. Junipers are grown for foliage and structure rather than showy flowers.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation where the soil drains well. Avoid wet locations, which can lead to root problems. Little routine pruning is needed, but the cultivar can be cut back if it outgrows its space. Watch for common juniper pests and fungal problems, especially where air circulation is poor.
