Creeping Juniper

Creeping juniper is a North American evergreen shrub with long, trailing branches that spread horizontally to form a dense mat. Its scale-like foliage is green to blue-green in summer and may take on purple tones in winter. ## Site and landscape use NC State Extension describes the species as adaptable to rocky or sandy soils when drainage is good. Full sun supports a dense habit; established plants tolerate drought, heat, deer browsing, and coastal conditions. Branches can spread much farther than the plant grows tall, and NC State reports mats up to about 10 feet wide. Plan space for lateral growth, especially beside paths or smaller perennials. The species is hardy across USDA Zones 3a–9b and works well on slopes, in rock gardens, and along retaining walls. ## Seasonal character The evergreen foliage gives year-round structure. Depending on the plant and conditions, green or blue-green tones may shift toward purple in winter. Small blue, berry-like cones may appear on female plants, though fruit is not guaranteed on a particular specimen. Junipers are conifers and do not have showy flowers. ## Maintenance Water regularly while establishing, then reduce irrigation as roots spread and the site proves well drained. Avoid persistently wet soil. Trim only when the plant exceeds its allotted area; severe pruning into old bare wood may leave lasting gaps.
