Pancake Creeping Juniper

Pancake is an exceptionally low juniper with layered, blue-green foliage that turns purple in winter. Its creeping branches root as they spread, making it a distinctive groundcover for sunny, dry, well-drained sites. ## Form and placement The American Conifer Society describes ‘Pancake’ as rarely exceeding 3 inches tall and spreading to about 32 inches after ten years; Utah State University lists 3–6 inches high and 4–8 feet wide. Allow for a broad, ground-hugging mat as it matures. Bill Janssen of Collectors’ Nursery introduced this named cultivar in the 1990s. Established plants tolerate drought, and the foliage remains evergreen with blue-green summer color and purple winter undertones. The university profile gives USDA Zones 3–9 and low water use. ## Maintenance Pancake needs little routine care once established. Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation. Avoid waterlogged sites, and trim only where the creeping edge exceeds its allotted space. Watch for occasional scale, mites, or bagworms, as with other junipers.
