About Youngstown Creeping Juniper

Youngstown is a named selection of creeping juniper, Juniperus horizontalis ‘Youngstown’. It forms a low, spreading evergreen groundcover; its foliage changes from green in the growing season to bronze or plum tones after cold weather ([Purdue Arboretum](https://www.arboretum.purdue.edu/explorer/plants/22411/); [American Conifer Society](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/juniperus-horizontalis-youngstown/)). ## Landscape Use Purdue describes ‘Youngstown’ as a mounding shrub with silver-green foliage and uses that include groundcover, mass planting, and rock gardens. The American Conifer Society identifies it as low-growing and reports modest annual growth, with mature spread varying by age and conditions. Allow 4–6 feet for its spreading mound, and avoid placing it where a narrow upright plant is required. Winter bronzing adds seasonal color while the plant remains evergreen. ## Growing Conditions Give this juniper a sunny, freely draining site. Purdue notes that it adapts to rocky, sandy, and gravelly soils and describes deer and drought tolerance. These traits suit slopes and low-water plantings after establishment, though new plants still need regular watering. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and check soil moisture during extended dry weather. Remove damaged branches as needed, but avoid cutting into old bare wood. Allow room for its spreading habit. [Purdue Arboretum](https://www.arboretum.purdue.edu/explorer/plants/22411/)
