About One-Seed Upright Juniper

One-seed juniper (Juniperus monosperma) is a drought-adapted evergreen shrub or small tree native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It grows in open, sunny, dry landscapes, and female plants produce blue-black to copper-colored berry-like cones, generally with one seed ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/juniperus-monosperma/common-name/oneseed-juniper/)). ## Landscape Use This species is often multi-stemmed and irregular rather than a uniform nursery-form tree. NC State reports a typical height of 6–20 feet, with potential to reach about 40 feet, and a similar spread. Its durable evergreen structure suits naturalistic, dry gardens, wildlife-oriented landscapes, and erosion-prone slopes where the climate is appropriate. Oneseed juniper and New Mexico juniper are additional common names. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil; NC State lists clay, loam, or sand and USDA zones 4a–8b. Established plants tolerate drought and can grow in dry, rocky or alkaline conditions. Oregon State University also describes it as a southwestern evergreen shrub or tree with a dense crown ([Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/juniperus-monosperma)). The cones take more than one season to mature. ## Maintenance Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation as roots develop and rainfall allows. Avoid persistently wet soil. Prune selectively to remove dead branches or maintain clearance; do not shear it into a shape that conflicts with its naturally irregular branching.
