Create design onlineAbout Green Mound Juniper
This record’s scientific name and transparent-image asset identify ‘Nana’, a compact Japanese garden juniper; the common name “Green Mound” is retained as supplied but does not change that selection identity. ‘Nana’ is distinct from the separately listed ‘Green Mound’ cultivar.
## Form and landscape use
The Morton Arboretum describes ‘Nana’ as a low evergreen groundcover, about 6–12 inches tall and 4–6 feet wide, with blue-green foliage that can take on a slight purple cast in winter. Its profile separately describes ‘Green Mound’ as soft and ground-hugging, 8–10 inches high and 5–6 feet wide, with foliage that does not winter-brown. Oregon State University likewise lists Greenmound and Nana separately, characterizing Nana as a compact mat whose curved branches form overlapping sprays. These are mature landscape descriptions; allow space for outward growth.
## Maintenance
Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil; Japanese garden juniper is intolerant of wet ground. Water during establishment and during prolonged dry spells, then avoid frequent irrigation once established. Prune lightly if the plant exceeds its allotted area, cutting back to living foliage.
