Create design onlineAbout Parson's Juniper
Parson’s juniper is a low, spreading evergreen with soft blue-green to gray-green foliage and pricklier juvenile growth. Its broad footprint suits slopes and banks, but it needs well-drained soil and room to spread.
## Form and placement
North Carolina Extension describes this selection at about 2–3 feet tall and 4–10 feet wide, with a dense, spreading habit. Use it as a groundcover, foundation planting, or erosion-control planting; avoid foot traffic and cramped sites. Its epithet honors Parsons Nursery in Long Island, New York.
## Growing conditions
Full sun gives the best growth, though some shade is tolerated. Plant in moist to dry, well-drained soil; avoid persistently wet sites. Once established it tolerates drought, heat, salt, and a range of soils. The species-specific [NC State profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/juniperus-davurica-parsonii/) lists USDA zones 4–9 and notes possible bagworms, scale, mites, blight, or root rot in poorly drained soil.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation as roots spread. Keep drainage open and remove damaged branches as needed. The plant may become more open and woody with age; selectively renew or replace it if its groundcover role declines.
