About Olympic Fire Mountain Laurel

‘Olympic Fire’ is an evergreen mountain laurel with dark red-pink flower buds that open to white blooms and fade pink against glossy green foliage. The upright, rounded shrub flowers in late spring. The [NVK Nurseries plant profile](https://www.nvknurseries.com/plant/Kalmia-latifolia-Olympic-Fire) lists 125–150 cm for both height and spread; [Pleasant Run Nursery](https://www.pleasantrunnursery.com/plantname/Kalmia-latifolia-Olympic-Fire) lists a more mature 8-foot height and 5-foot spread. Site and age affect the final size. ## Site and use Mountain laurel prefers acidic, well-drained soil with steady moisture while it establishes. Full sun can bring out stronger flower color, while some shade is tolerated. Use ‘Olympic Fire’ as a specimen or in a foundation planting where the spring flowers and evergreen leaves can be seen up close. The cultivar is moderately drought tolerant after establishment, but prolonged dry spells can still stress it. ## Maintenance Water consistently during the first growing season, then adjust to rainfall and soil moisture. Prune only when needed and do so soon after flowering, allowing time for the next season’s flower buds to form. Protect the foliage from harsh winter sun in exposed sites, and avoid planting where water stands around the roots.
