Japanese kerria is a deciduous shrub with arching green stems, bright green leaves, and yellow flowers in spring. Its tolerance for shade makes it useful beneath open tree canopies, along woodland edges, or in informal shrub borders where spring color is welcome.
## Form and garden use
Plants form a broad, twiggy mound, commonly about 3–7 feet tall and 5–9 feet wide. Slender green canes remain ornamental after the flowers fade. *Kerria japonica* includes simple-flowered plants as well as double-flowered selections such as ‘Pleniflora’; flower form varies among selections. Use it as a specimen, informal hedge, or massed shrub, allowing space for the arching branches.
## Growing conditions
Japanese kerria grows in full sun to shade, though flowers may fade faster in strong sun. It prefers well-drained soil and tolerates occasional dryness once established. The stems bloom on the previous year’s growth, so avoid shearing them before spring flowering. Plants can spread through root suckers, which are easy to remove when they appear. North Carolina State Extension lists USDA Zones 4–9; local exposure and winter conditions can affect performance.
## Maintenance
After flowering, remove dead or damaged canes and selectively thin older stems at ground level to encourage fresh growth. Remove unwanted suckers to keep the shrub within its allotted space. Avoid heavy pruning in late winter because it would remove stems carrying the next spring’s flowers.
