About Japanese Kerria

Japanese Kerria, Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora', is a deciduous shrub valued for its double golden flowers in mid-spring and fresh green, prominently veined leaves. Its arching stems give an informal woodland or mixed-border planting a light structure, while suckering growth can gradually make a broad thicket. The Royal Horticultural Society lists a mature height of 2.5–4m and spread of 1.5–2.5m, and records “double-flowered Japanese rose” and “Japanese rose” as common names; allow room for its natural habit or use it where gradual massing is welcome. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Kerria tolerates several soil textures, including clay, chalk, loam and sand, provided drainage is suitable. Flowering is most dependable when established stems are retained: avoid routine hard pruning before spring bloom, then remove old or crowded stems and unwanted suckers as needed. In a naturalized planting, monitor its spread so it does not overtake nearby plants. ## Maintenance After flowering, thin older stems at the base and remove suckers that are growing beyond the intended area. Water during prolonged dry spells while the shrub establishes; keep the root zone moist but avoid persistently waterlogged soil.
