Create design onlineAbout Poco™ Orange Red Hot Poker
POCO™ ‘Orange’ is a compact, clump-forming red hot poker bred for a small footprint and repeated summer-to-fall color. Burnished orange flowers with hot red tips rise above short, grassy green leaves.
## Size and garden use
Terra Nova lists foliage height and spread separately from the flowering height: foliage reaches about 14 inches, the clump spreads about 16 inches, and flower spikes reach about 21 inches. The orange spikes bloom from July through October in the grower’s listing. POCO™ ‘Orange’ belongs to Terra Nova’s POCO™ Series; the official [product profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/kniphofia-poco-orange/) identifies U.S. patent PP27677 and EU grant EU46794, denomination code ‘TNKNIPO’. Use it as a front-of-border color accent, in a small garden, or in a mass planting. Its flowers can also be cut, and the grower notes hummingbird interest.
## Growing conditions
Grow in full sun in average, well-drained soil. The listed hardiness range is USDA zones 6–9. Water during hot, dry periods, especially while flowering, and avoid sites where water lingers around the crown in winter. The foliage forms a dense grassy clump that returns seasonally.
## Maintenance
Remove fading flower spikes to encourage additional blooms and for a tidy appearance. In spring, trim damaged or dry foliage to make room for fresh growth. In cold-winter areas, keep water from collecting in the crown and follow local guidance for winter protection.
