About Poco™ Sunset Red Hot Poker

POCO™ Sunset is a compact, clump-forming red hot poker with bicolor red-orange and orange flowers on short spikes. Terra Nova reports repeat blooms from July through October in Canby, Oregon; see its [POCO™ Sunset plant profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/kniphofia-poco-sunset/) for selection details. ## Garden Use The foliage reaches about 16 inches tall and 15 inches wide, while the flower spikes rise to about 23 inches. Multiple crowns create a rounded clump suited to the front or middle of a sunny border, a mass planting, or a small color accent. The long bloom season can carry the display from summer into fall, and the cut flowers attract hummingbirds. ## Growing Conditions Terra Nova lists USDA zones 6–9 and full sun. Kniphofia grows best in well-drained soil; this selection is described for average garden soil and average water. Established plants tolerate some dry periods, but flowering is stronger with moisture during active growth. Avoid sites where winter water remains around the crown. ## Maintenance Deadhead fading flower spikes to encourage continued flowering, then leave healthy foliage to recharge the plant. Remove spent leaves during spring cleanup. Divide crowded clumps every few years, preferably in spring in colder regions. In wet-winter areas, loosely tie leaves over the crown in fall to help shed water.
