Kniphofia 'Rocket Jr.'

‘Rocket Jr.’ is a dwarf red hot poker with tightly held, upright grass-like foliage and conical flowers that shift from deep red-orange to golden yellow. Terra Nova lists a 12-inch foliage height, 9-inch spread and 16-inch flowering height; blooms are reported from June through October in USDA zones 6–9 ([Terra Nova](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/kniphofia-rocket-jr/)). ## Garden Use Its compact footprint fits the front of a sunny border, small perennial beds and mixed containers. The long succession of flower spikes adds a bright vertical accent, and the breeder lists it as a cut flower and deer resistant. ## Growing Conditions Provide full sun and well-drained soil. Red hot pokers handle dry intervals once established, though regular moisture during active growth supports better flowering. Avoid winter-wet sites so water does not collect around the crown. ## Maintenance Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged summer heat. Remove spent spikes to tidy the clump and encourage continued flowering. Cut back dead foliage in spring after winter dormancy.
