About Red Hot Poker Torch Lily 'Flamenco'

Flamenco is a sun-loving Kniphofia uvaria with upright spikes carrying yellow, orange, and red shades. Benary lists this selection for USDA zones 5–9 and reports an average crop height of 31 inches; its [exact Flamenco plant page](https://www.benary.com/products/kniphofia-uvaria-flamenco) includes growing and product details. ## Garden Use This clump-forming red hot poker works in sunny borders, landscape plantings, and cut-flower gardens. Mature dimensions vary by setting: the Chicago Botanic Garden trial recorded plants about 62 inches tall and 48 inches wide, while the developer lists a shorter average crop height. Its bright, warm-colored spikes rise above grassy foliage, adding a strong vertical accent; flowering time also shifts by location. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Space plants roughly 18–24 inches apart while establishing a clump. Keep the crown free of standing water, especially through winter, and provide moisture during active growth. The [RHS Kniphofia uvaria guide](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/kniphofia-uvaria/classid.2000027803/) recommends good drainage and a dry mulch around the crown in autumn in colder or wet-winter gardens. ## Maintenance Remove spent flower spikes to keep borders tidy and encourage continued display. Cut back old leaves in spring as new growth emerges. In cold or wet-winter gardens, use a loose, dry mulch around the crown to limit moisture damage. NC State’s [Flamenco cut-flower trial](https://cutflowers.ces.ncsu.edu/kniphofia-uvaria-flamenco/) notes that stems can lengthen as plants become established.
