About Kodiak Black Diervilla

Kodiak® Black is a compact, deciduous native shrub, usually 3–4 feet tall and wide, with dark burgundy-purple foliage and clusters of yellow flowers in summer. It grows in sun or shade; leaf color is strongest with some direct light. ## Landscape Use Use Kodiak® Black in a mixed border, a small informal hedge, or a grouped naturalistic planting where its spring and fall color can repeat through the bed. Its spreading, suckering habit helps it fill space, so allow room for gradual expansion and keep it clear of places that need a strict edge. ## Growing Conditions This cultivar is hardy in USDA zones 4–7 and adapts to many soils, including drier sites. Shade is tolerated, while a few hours of direct sun improve foliage color and flowering. The yellow summer flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. ## Maintenance Prune in early spring to shape the shrub or manage its spread. Proven Winners recommends a controlled-release fertilizer; after establishment, water during prolonged dry weather if the soil becomes very dry.
