Create design onlineAbout Kodiak® Red Diervilla
Kodiak® Red is a deciduous Diervilla selected for red-tinted new growth, vivid fall color, and yellow flowers. It typically reaches 3–4 feet tall and about 4–5 feet wide, making it a useful mid-height shrub where a spreading plant can fill open ground.
## Landscape Use
Place it in a border, informal hedge, foundation planting, or mass planting. Its long stems and neat foliage can also be cut as greenery for arrangements. The shrub spreads by suckers, so leave space for its mature width.
## Growing Conditions
Kodiak® Red is hardy in USDA zones 4–7 and tolerates sun, part shade, and shade. The foliage color and flowering are stronger with some direct sun. It adapts to most soils, including dry sites, but avoid locations that remain waterlogged. Yellow flowers appear through summer and into fall and support bees and butterflies.
## Maintenance
Regular pruning is unnecessary. If shaping is needed, prune in early spring; every few years, rejuvenate an older, sparse plant by removing about one-third of the thickest stems at ground level.
