Golden rain tree is a rounded, deciduous shade tree valued for airy foliage, midsummer sprays of yellow flowers, and papery lantern-like seed capsules. It suits a sunny lawn, park, or spacious garden where its canopy and seasonal display can be enjoyed and fallen flowers and pods are manageable.
## Form and seasonal interest
The crown spreads broadly, often reaching about 30–40 feet in height and width. Compound leaves emerge with pink-bronze tones and mature green; autumn color varies and may be yellow. In summer, 12–15-inch panicles carry small bright-yellow flowers, followed by three-part capsules that turn from green to tan and can persist into winter. Flowers attract bees, while the pods add a distinctive texture and can be used in dried arrangements.
## Growing conditions
Choose full sun and moist, well-drained soil for best growth. The tree tolerates a range of soils, including acidic through alkaline, and established plants handle heat and periods of drought. Its adaptable nature can suit urban sites, but branches may be vulnerable in storms. Allow room for the mature spread and avoid placing it where flower, leaf, or pod litter will be troublesome.
## Regional considerations
Golden rain tree self-seeds readily and has naturalized in parts of North America; the extent of concern varies by region. Before planting, check local or state invasive-plant guidance and choose a suitable native alternative where spread is a concern. Remove unwanted seedlings while small and collect fallen pods near paving, patios, or paths. See the [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/koelreuteria-paniculata/common-name/varnish-tree/) and [Morton Arboretum guidance](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/golden-rain-tree/) for regional detail.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment, then water during prolonged dry spells. Keep mulch away from the trunk and prune selectively to remove damaged or poorly attached branches. Monitor for seedlings beyond the planting area, and clear pods and flower litter where they create a slipping or cleanup issue.
