Fan Aloe Plant

Fan aloe, Kumara plicatilis (formerly Aloe plicatilis), is a slow-growing, branched succulent shrub or small tree. Grey-green leaves form flat fans at the branch tips, and orange-scarlet tubular flowers appear in late winter and spring ([Cambridge Botanic Garden](https://www.botanic.cam.ac.uk/the-garden/plant-list/aloe-plicatilis)). ## Garden Use Its sculptural branching makes it a specimen plant in a warm, sheltered landscape or a distinctive container subject. The Cambridge Botanic Garden describes the species in its native Western Cape fynbos, where it can become a substantial small tree. ## Growing Conditions Give it strong light, fresh air and sharply drained sandy soil. Protect it from cold conditions and avoid prolonged damp around the roots. The RHS rates it H2 and recommends full sun in a freely draining medium; this rating is not a USDA zone conversion ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/501414/kumara-plicatilis/details)). ## Maintenance During spring through early autumn, water moderately and allow the growing medium to dry between waterings.
