Create design onlineAbout Laced Up® Elderberry
Laced Up® elderberry pairs nearly black, finely cut foliage with a narrow, upright outline that fits a screening role in smaller gardens. Pink flower clusters appear in early summer, and black fruit can follow when a compatible elderberry grows nearby.
## Site and size
Plant in full sun to part shade in zones 4–7. The mature shrub reaches about 6–10 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide; allow space for its columnar form. It grows in a range of soils, including moist, well-drained or wet ground, and tolerates drought after it is established. [Proven Winners ColorChoice](https://www.provenwinnerscolorchoice.com/product/laced-up-elderberry/) identifies the selection as Sambucus nigra ‘SNR1292’ and lists its size, hardiness, flowers, and foliage.
## Seasonal interest
The lacy dark leaves provide contrast through the growing season. Plant another Sambucus nigra nearby if you want berries; the breeder suggests Black Lace® and notes that flowers and berries are best used after processing. Foliage and stems are toxic, so keep them away from children and pets.
## Maintenance
Pruning is usually optional. Flowers form on old wood, so avoid cutting it back if you want the summer bloom and possible fall fruit. Remove a damaged or leaning branch outside midsummer through fall. The plant patent identifies the cultivar as ‘SNR1292’; its U.S. patent grant publication is dated March 6, 2018 ([USPP29051P3](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP29051)).
