About Cherokee Crape Myrtle

Cherokee crape myrtle is a deciduous small tree or large shrub with bright red summer flowers and a vase-shaped, often multi-trunked form. UF/IFAS lists a mature height of 10–15 feet, a spread of 6–10 feet, and USDA hardiness zones 7A–9A ([cultivar profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST345)). ## Garden Use Use it as a specimen or small shade tree where its mature spread can develop. Showy flowers arrive in late spring and summer in warmer areas and in summer elsewhere; orange, red, and yellow foliage extends interest into fall. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun for best flowering. It grows in well-drained sand, loam, or clay and tolerates acidic to slightly alkaline soil. Water new plantings while they establish; UF/IFAS rates this cultivar highly drought tolerant once established. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and preserve its natural branching. Avoid topping; severe cuts can cause unwanted basal shoots. [UF/IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST345).
