About Pocomoke Crape Myrtle

‘Pocomoke’ is a compact, deciduous crape myrtle with deep rose-pink flower clusters in summer and glossy foliage that turns bronze-red in autumn. Its naturally small, dense form suits containers, low hedges, foundation beds, and small gardens. ## Form and flowering The U.S. National Arboretum released this named hybrid in 1998. Extension sources describe a mature plant up to about 5 feet tall and wide, though smaller specimens are also reported. The late-summer flowers appear on new wood, and round seed capsules may remain into winter. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil for the best flowering. Water during establishment and extended dry periods; once established, the plant tolerates drought. Leave enough room for its spread rather than shearing it into a tight shape. A light mulch helps conserve soil moisture. ## Maintenance Prune in winter or early spring before new growth begins, removing dead or damaged stems and shaping lightly. Avoid hard annual cutting; the shrub flowers on new growth and its natural mounding habit is useful in compact spaces. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/lagerstroemia-pocomoke/common-name/crepe-myrtle/) describes its size, flowering, siting, and care. The [U.S. National Arboretum](https://usna.usda.gov/assets/images/as_standard_image/Lagerstroemia_Pocomoke.pdf) records the cultivar’s introduction and evaluation.
