About Purple Trailing Lantana

Purple trailing lantana is a low, spreading lantana with lavender-purple to pink flowers that have yellow throats. NC State Extension describes the species as about 1–1.5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, flowering from June until the first fall frost. ## Flowers and placement The [NC State Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/lantana-montevidensis/) identifies Purple Trailing Lantana as Lantana montevidensis and lists it for hardiness zones 8–10. Its cascading stems suit groundcover, slope stabilization, hanging baskets, and containers. The species attracts bees and butterflies and tolerates heat, humidity, and coastal salt spray. ## Maintenance Plant in full sun or partial shade in sandy, well-drained soil. Water while establishing, then allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings; established plants are drought tolerant. In zone 8 the stems may die back in winter and resprout with mulch. Lantana is toxic if eaten, and sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling it.
