Create design onlineAbout Shamrock Red Lantana
Shamrock Red Lantana adds vivid red flowers to warm-season containers and sunny plantings. Ball FloraPlant describes this selection as medium mounded, well branched, and uniform, with medium vigor and a season-extending bloom. Its 12–16-inch height and 12–14-inch spread suit quarts, larger pots, and hanging baskets.
## Flowers and garden use
The breeder identifies Shamrock Red as ‘Balshamred’ and calls its flower color more vivid red than competing varieties. The page also notes its use as a heat-tolerant component in mixed plantings. Lantana flowers generally appear from midsummer until frost, and NC State Extension notes they attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. The trial quotation on Ball’s page concerns Shamrock Lavender, so it does not describe this red selection.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sunny site with moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly while plants establish, then let the soil dry somewhat between waterings. Established lantana tolerates poorer soil and drought. It is grown as an annual in colder areas and may overwinter as a perennial in mild climates; cold tolerance varies among cultivars. In tropical regions, lantana can become invasive.
## Maintenance
Pinch or trim stems as needed to keep a rounded shape. In containers, check moisture more often during hot weather and feed according to the product label. Watch overwintered plants for whiteflies, spider mites, leafminers, and aphids. Lantana is toxic to livestock, and leaves or unripe fruit may irritate skin; avoid ingestion and use gloves if handling causes irritation.
