About Recurved European Larch

Horstmann’s Recurva is a deciduous European larch with unusually twisted, curling branches and soft needles that turn golden yellow before falling. It brings spring and autumn color, then an intricate, sculptural branch pattern through winter. ## Form and Seasonal Color Rosy buds swell on the gray branches in late winter, followed by bright green needle clusters in spring. The needles deepen in summer and turn gold in autumn. Iseli Nursery describes a broad upright form and lists a garden size near 12 feet tall by 8 feet wide; the [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/374457/larix-decidua-horstmanns-recurved/details) gives smaller mature ranges but also notes trees reaching 3.5 meters tall. Allow room for a small specimen tree, recognizing that reported mature dimensions vary. The RHS lists well-drained soil and full sun; Iseli lists hardiness to Zone 2. ## Siting Use it as a specimen where its seasonal changes and contorted limbs can be seen. European larch needs full sun and benefits from cool conditions; University of Wisconsin Extension advises avoiding wet soils for larches. It is deciduous, so its golden fall color gives way to bare branches rather than winter foliage. ## Maintenance Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water during establishment and during prolonged summer dryness. The RHS notes no pruning is normally required; preserve the naturally twisted outline rather than shearing it. [Iseli Nursery’s cultivar page](https://iselinursery.com/colorful-conifers/larix-larch/larix-decidua-horstmanns-recurva/) provides the selection’s seasonal description and garden-size listing, while [Wisconsin Horticulture](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/european-larch-larix-decidua/) describes European larch care.
