Create design onlineAbout Latania Palm
Latania is a genus of three accepted palm species native to the Mascarene Islands of the western Indian Ocean. They are commonly called latan palms, and the species are distinguished in part by the colors of their leaves: blue-gray, red, or yellow-toned forms.
## Identification and placement
[Kew’s Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:31313-1) treats *Latania* as an accepted genus and lists three accepted species. [University of Florida IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST350) describes the leaf-color differences among Blue Latan (*L. loddigesii*), Red Latan (*L. lontaroides*), and Yellow Latan (*L. verschaffeltii*). Because the three species differ, identify which Latania you are planting before choosing a permanent location or estimating mature canopy and winter tolerance.
## Maintenance
Use care guidance and winter protection appropriate to the identified species. Keep the planting area sized for its eventual canopy, and remove only dead or damaged foliage using safe palm-pruning practices.
