About Annual Sweet Pea

## Landscape value Annual sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a cool-season annual with fragrant, pea-shaped flowers and tendrils that climb a support. Flower color and mature size vary by cultivar. It is distinct from perennial sweet pea (L. latifolius). Its seeds and fruits are poisonous and must not be eaten; do not confuse it with edible garden peas. ## Growing conditions [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/lathyrus-odoratus/common-name/sweet-pea/) recommends a cool climate, full sun, fertile well-drained soil and even moisture. Provide a support for climbing forms. It describes plants ranging from about 3 to 8 feet depending on form; FireSmart BC gives approximately 2 m for its chart entry. Flowering may decline in prolonged heat. ## Maintenance and FireSmart placement Remove faded flowers to extend bloom, manage spent vines and accumulated dry material, and maintain clearance around buildings. [FireSmart BC](https://firesmartbc.ca/landscaping-hub/fire-resistant-plants/) lists sweet pea but says further research is needed to determine its appropriate home ignition zone. Vines and supports need particular attention to ladder-fuel risks; follow local placement and maintenance guidance.
