About Legend of the Small® Bottlebrush

Legend of the Small® is a compact selection of Fothergilla x intermedia, grown for fragrant white spring flowers and vivid fall foliage. Its small, rounded form works at the front of a border, along an edge, or in a grouped planting where its seasonal changes can be seen. ## Seasonal Interest The shrub flowers in spring, with nectar-rich blooms visited by bees. Bluish-green leaves fill out in summer and turn through warm autumn colors before dropping. Proven Winners lists mature dimensions of 24–30 inches tall by 24–36 inches wide and hardiness in USDA zones 5–9. ## Siting Plant in sun to part shade in reasonably drained soil; some shade is tolerated, though flowering and fall color are strongest with some daily sun. Space plants about 2–3 feet apart for a low hedge or mass planting, allowing the wider plants enough room to develop. ## Cultivation This deciduous shrub is described as easy to care for and deer resistant. It generally needs little pruning, and regular shearing would work against its natural shape. Remove any unwanted root suckers as they appear. The [Proven Winners plant profile](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/fothergilla/legend-small-bottlebrush-fothergilla-x-intermedia) has selection-specific size, flowering, and care details; see also the [ColorChoice profile](https://www.provenwinnerscolorchoice.com/product/legend-of-the-small-bottlebrush/). ## Maintenance Water during prolonged dry spells while the shrub establishes, then adjust to rainfall and soil drainage. If pruning is needed, do it after flowering so the next season’s buds are preserved.
