About Silver-Ball Conebush

Silver-ball conebush is a South African shrub native to limestone fynbos on coastal flats in the Western Cape. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants and are insect-pollinated; field observations record flowering in spring and early summer. [SANBI Red List](https://redlist.sanbi.org/species.php?species=794-87) [Biodiversity Explorer](https://www.biodiversityexplorer.info/plants/proteaceae/leucadendron_muirii.htm) ## Garden setting The species is associated with limestone fynbos, and its seed is dispersed by wind after fire releases it from fire-resistant inflorescences. For cultivated leucadendrons, the RHS recommends a warm, sunny position with well-drained soil; its general genus guidance also favors sheltered, dry conditions and careful winter watering. [RHS Leucadendron growing guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/9990/leucadendron-salignum/details) ## Maintenance Choose a sunny site with excellent drainage and avoid waterlogged soil. Water moderately while actively growing and reduce watering in winter, adjusting to local rainfall and container conditions. RHS guidance for the genus recommends little or no routine pruning; remove only damaged or untidy growth and avoid cutting back into old wood without a specific reason.
