Leucothoe axillaris, known as coastal dog-hobble, is a low-growing evergreen shrub with a spreading, vase-like habit and arching stems. Its leathery leaves are glossy dark green, turning a striking purplish-bronze in winter. In spring, clusters of small, fragrant, white bell-shaped flowers appear. This shrub thrives in moist, acidic, well-drained soils and is ideal for massing in shaded borders or woodland gardens. It is deer-resistant and provides excellent year-round interest.
