Blazing Star

Blazing star (Liatris spicata), also called spike gayfeather, is an upright, clump-forming perennial with narrow leaves and dense flower spikes that open from the top downward. Extension sources describe garden plants from about 2–3 feet to 3–6 feet tall, so allow room for the stems and use the existing 2–4-foot catalog range as a practical garden estimate. Bees and butterflies use the flowers; the seed heads and standing stems can add structure after bloom. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun in moist but well-drained soil. The species tolerates a range of garden conditions, but good drainage matters in winter. Water new plants while they establish; mature plants can tolerate short dry periods. ## Maintenance Tall flowering stems may need staking in exposed sites. Leave some dry stems standing through winter for habitat, then cut them back as new growth begins. Divide crowded clumps when flowering declines.
