Licuala is a genus of fan palms, not a single species, so size and growing requirements vary widely across this group. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney describes roughly 135 species across South-East Asia, the western Pacific, and northern Australia; some are solitary palms while others grow in clusters.
## Form and growing conditions
The pleated fan leaves are the genus’s signature ornamental feature. Individual species differ substantially: NParks describes Licuala grandis as a slow-growing rainforest understory palm that prefers shade, moist but well-drained soil, and protection from direct sun. By contrast, its profile for L. spinosa records tolerance of full sun through full shade and both moderate and plentiful water. These species examples show why a single hardiness zone, mature size, or watering schedule cannot describe the entire genus.
## Maintenance
First identify the species before choosing a planting site or setting a care schedule. Match light, moisture, temperature, and space to that species’ requirements, and provide appropriate drainage unless its profile specifically supports wetter conditions.
