About Recurve Ligustrum Shrub (Ligustrum Recurvifolium)

‘Recurvifolium’ is an evergreen Japanese privet with an upright, somewhat more open habit than the species. Its glossy dark-green leaves have wavy margins and tips that curl backward, while small white flower clusters appear in late spring. The flowers can have an unpleasant odor, and blue-black berries follow; privet berries are toxic to dogs ([NC State Extension’s cultivar profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ligustrum-japonicum-recurvifolium/common-name/crinkle-leaf-privet/)). ## Placement Use this shrub for a hedge, privacy screen, foundation planting, or container. It tolerates full sun or partial shade and dry conditions, but avoid wet soils. NC State Extension notes that this cultivar is not presently known to be invasive, though it could revert to the wild type, and does not recommend it for gardens in the Southeast; check local guidance before planting. The cultivar’s growth habit is somewhat more open than Japanese privet species plants. ## Maintenance Prune as needed to shape the shrub. Flowers appear on new growth, so pruning can affect the season’s bloom display. Watch for whiteflies, weevils, scale, and rust mites, and avoid allowing dogs to chew the foliage or berries.
