Golden privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium ‘Aureum’) is a large, fast-growing shrub valued for rich yellow-gold leaves, often with green centers. It forms a dense screen or hedge, and its leaf retention can range from evergreen to semi-evergreen with climate. [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/78015/ligustrum-ovalifolium-aureum-v/details) · [Oregon State University Landscape Plants](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/ligustrum-ovalifolium-aureum).
## Foliage and flowers
The oval leaves bring the strongest color, especially in sunny positions; green shoots may appear and can be pruned back to maintain the golden effect. RHS describes the plant as evergreen, while Oregon State University classifies it as semi-evergreen, so winter leaf retention varies across climates. The shrub can reach roughly 2.5–4 m tall and wide, though regular clipping keeps a hedge within its allotted space. Small, dull-white flower panicles open in summer, followed by glossy black fruit in autumn.
## Site and uses
Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained chalk, clay, loam, or sandy soil. Oregon State University reports that this selection tolerates heat and is hardy to USDA Zone 7; its stated hardiness is a minimum and does not establish an upper zone limit. Use the golden foliage for a formal hedge, privacy screen, or mixed shrub border, allowing enough space for an untrimmed specimen.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and prolonged dry weather. Clip hedges to shape after flowering, and remove reverted green shoots when maintaining a predominantly gold display. Check the center of the plant periodically for light and airflow, and trim only as much as needed to keep the desired form.
