About Chinese Privet

Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense) is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree native to China, Vietnam and Laos. It has small opposite green leaves, late-spring panicles of white, unpleasantly scented flowers, and clusters of purple to blue-black fruit. NC State Extension lists Chinese privet as invasive in North Carolina and advises considering alternatives, while UF/IFAS identifies it as invasive and noxious in Florida; see the [NC State profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ligustrum-sinense/) and [UF/IFAS species profile](https://plant-directory.ifas.ufl.edu/plant-directory/ligustrum-sinense/) for regional guidance. ## Growing Conditions NC State describes the species as growing in full sun or partial shade and tolerating varied soils. It can reach about 6–15 feet tall; NC State’s profile gives a 10–15-foot width range. USDA zones 6–9 are listed for this species. ## Maintenance Chinese privet spreads by seed and root suckers, and established shrubs can be difficult to eradicate. Check local invasive-plant guidance before planting or managing it; berries are eaten by birds and can spread the seeds.
