About Glossy Privet

Glossy privet is an evergreen shrub or tree with a dense crown and glossy, dark-green leaves. Small creamy-white panicles bloom from late spring into summer, followed by purple-black berries that attract birds. The flowers can smell strong or unpleasant, and berries can become litter and are toxic to dogs ([North Carolina Extension’s species profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ligustrum-lucidum/common-name/glossy-privet/); [UF/IFAS species profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST354)). ## Placement Give mature plants plenty of room: UF/IFAS describes a tree 25–40 feet tall with a 25–35-foot spread, while North Carolina Extension notes shrubs often remain 12–15 feet tall but can reach about 30 feet when trained as trees. The species grows in full sun or partial shade and tolerates dry conditions. It can be shaped as a hedge or screen, but it is invasive in Florida and considered invasive in North Carolina; choose a native alternative where local guidance advises against planting it ([UF/IFAS invasive plant directory](https://plant-directory.ifas.ufl.edu/plant-directory/ligustrum-lucidum/)). ## Maintenance Prune flowering panicles before fruit forms if reducing seed production. Remove seedlings promptly, and clear fallen berries from paving to limit litter. Keep pets from eating the leaves or fruit.
