Orange Asiatic Lily

Lilium 'Brunello' is an Asiatic lily with upright stems, glossy lance-shaped leaves and upward-facing orange flowers. The flowers open in summer, and the bulbous perennial is deciduous. The [Royal Horticultural Society’s cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/224103/lilium-brunello/details) lists a mature height of about 1.6–3.3 feet and spread of 4–20 inches. ## Garden Use Use Brunello in sunny or partly shaded borders, patio containers, or as a cut flower. Its orange to dark orange blooms and dark red stamens provide a strong focal color; the upright habit suits planting among lower perennials. Keep the roots cool and allow the foliage to remain after flowering so the bulb can replenish. ## Growing Conditions Plant the bulb in moist but well-drained soil, enriched with leaf mould or other organic matter. Full sun or partial shade is suitable, with shelter from strong exposure. The RHS lists acid to neutral soil and recommends keeping the base shaded. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can damage bulbs. ## Maintenance Deadhead after flowering if you do not want seed capsules to develop, then leave the stem until its foliage dies down before cutting it back. Lily bulbs are ornamental and must not be eaten; the RHS also warns that lilies are toxic to cats if eaten.
