About Flax (Linum)

Linum is a genus of annual and perennial herbs whose garden value varies by species, from delicate blue-flowered perennials to annual flaxes grown for seasonal color. The narrow leaves and open flowers give many cultivated flaxes a light, natural appearance, while mature size, flower color, and hardiness depend on the species. ## Garden Character Perennial flax (*Linum perenne*) forms a tufted clump about 1–2 feet tall and bears sky-blue flowers in late spring; each flower lasts a day, while the plant can bloom for several weeks. Narbonne flax (*L. narbonense*) is a separate blue-flowered example recorded for sun or partial shade and sandy or loamy soil. These species examples illustrate the genus rather than a universal Linum specification. ## Siting and Care Choose a species before assigning a precise site or mature-size expectation. Many ornamental flaxes are used where their fine stems and small flowers can be seen close up, including sunny borders, naturalistic plantings, and well-drained settings suited to the selected species. Follow species-level watering and hardiness guidance, since needs differ across the genus. ## Maintenance Avoid treating one species’ dimensions or flowering season as a standard for every flax. Remove spent stems when they look untidy, and let seed heads remain where natural reseeding is welcome.
