Create design onlineAbout Sapphire Blue Flax
Sapphire is a compact perennial-flax selection with fine foliage and clear blue flowers. It suits the front of a border or a rock garden, where its delicate stems and long succession of blooms can be enjoyed up close.\n\n## Garden Use\nPublished nursery profiles give slightly different mature sizes: one lists 10–12 inches tall and 18–23 inches wide, while another describes plants about 15 inches tall with roughly an 18-inch spread. Use those ranges as a planning guide rather than a fixed limit. Both profiles describe blue flowers and a compact mound; see the [Swift Greenhouses Sapphire profile](https://www.swiftgreenhouses.com/plant/Linum-Perenne-Sapphire) and the [Gertens Sapphire listing](https://www.gertens.com/blue-sapphire-perennial-flax).\n\n## Growing Conditions\nGrow Sapphire in sun or partial shade in soil that drains well. Perennial flax tolerates dry conditions after establishment, but it will not thrive in standing water. The [NC State guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/linum-perenne/common-name/perennial-flax/) recommends good drainage and explains that flowers open in morning sun; Gertens likewise describes dry-to-average moisture and very well-drained soil.\n\n## Maintenance\nWater new plants while roots settle in, then allow the soil to dry between waterings. Remove faded stems or trim after flowering if you want to reduce seedlings. Leave the crown undisturbed as it regrows in spring.
