About Moraine Sweetgum

'Moraine' is a cold-hardy American sweetgum selected for its upright young form and vivid fall foliage. UF/IFAS describes a mature height of 40–60 feet and spread of 35–40 feet, with a crown that becomes more oval as the tree ages; its star-shaped leaves turn red and yellow in autumn ([UF/IFAS Extension](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST361); [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/sweet-gum/)). ## Siting Reserve a large, sunny site with deep soil and room for a broad canopy. The cultivar suits a park, campus, or spacious residential setting as a shade or specimen tree. UF/IFAS rates it for USDA Zones 5A–8B. It accepts clay, loam, or sandy soil, but shallow, drought-prone ground can lead to decline. ## Seasonal Interest Glossy, star-shaped leaves color in fall, and the tree's spiky seed balls can persist as a winter feature. The fruit also drops and can be troublesome over patios, sidewalks, and roads; the roots may form large surface roots and lift nearby paving. ## Maintenance Little pruning is normally required. Plant from a container while young because established sweetgums are difficult to transplant, and keep the root area clear of construction disturbance. Sweep fallen seed balls from hard surfaces where they create a slipping or litter problem.
