About Slender Silhouette Sweetgum Tree

‘Slender Silhouette’ is a tall, narrow cultivar of American sweetgum, introduced after Don Shadow found it growing wild. Its strong columnar shape suits places where a full-sized tree is needed but planting space is limited. ## Garden Use Use this cultivar as a vertical accent, along a property edge, or in a narrow median or small garden. The [North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/liquidambar-styraciflua-slender-silhouette/) describes a mature height of 50–60 feet and a width of 5–6 feet. The star-shaped leaves turn unpredictable shades that can include yellow, orange, red, or burgundy in fall. It produces far fewer prickly seed capsules than the species, but it is not strictly fruitless. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Tough or relatively poor soils can slow growth and help the tree maintain its narrow form; ideal growing conditions may encourage rapid growth and splitting. Water regularly during the first year, then reduce watering as the tree establishes and becomes more tolerant of dry soil. Avoid highly alkaline soil, which can cause leaf chlorosis. ## Maintenance Mulch around the base to help moderate soil moisture and temperature. If pruning is needed to remove stray branches, do it in late winter or early spring before new leaves appear.
