Big Blue is an evergreen lilyturf selected for dense, arching dark-green leaves and lavender-to-blue flowers on upright spikes. This compact clump works along paths, beneath shrubs or as a low groundcover in a partly shaded bed.
## Form and season
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/111957/liriope-muscari-big-blue/details) describes small violet-purple flowers in autumn and black fruits; the [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/blue-lily-turf/) gives a typical mature size of 12–18 inches high and wide and hardiness zones 5–10, with protection advisable in colder parts of zone 5. The RHS also lists clay, loam and sandy soils and a dense clumping habit.
## Growing conditions
Grow in partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Big Blue tolerates a range of light and soil conditions, including drought once established. Water new plants regularly while roots develop, then adjust irrigation to rainfall and site conditions.
## Maintenance
Remove faded leaves or flower stems as needed. In colder regions, foliage may look ragged after winter; a late-winter or early-spring cutback can tidy the clump before new growth begins. Divide established clumps in spring if they become crowded or if you want to expand the planting.
