Create design onlineAbout Variegata Lily Turf Grass
Variegata lilyturf forms an evergreen tuft of arching leaves edged in yellow, with violet to purple flower spikes in summer. Its bright foliage and tolerance of shade make it useful as an edging or low ground cover beneath trees and shrubs.
## Form and Use
The University of Florida IFAS profile describes Variegata as a fine-textured, upright perennial with black berries after bloom. Its size entries range from 6 to 18 inches tall and give a 1- to 2-foot spread, so it works along a bed edge or in a broad mass where its foliage can brighten shade. It is not a lawn substitute and does not tolerate foot traffic.
## Growing Conditions
Grow it in partial or full shade for best foliage, though it can also grow in a sunny position. Use well-drained soil; the [UF/IFAS Variegata profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP349) gives USDA Zones 6–10 and describes moderate drought tolerance. The profile also notes that high heat can cause foliage to melt out, especially in warm sites.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and during extended dry spells. Divide clumps when they become crowded, and remove damaged leaves as new growth begins. Allow enough space for the foliage to spread without placing it where people will walk over it.
