Little Goblin® Red is a compact, rounded winterberry holly selected for large, vivid red fruit. It flowers in late spring, and a nearby male Little Goblin® Guy is needed for fruit set ([Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/ilex/little-goblin-red-winterberry-holly-ilex-verticillata), [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ilex-verticillata/), [plant patent](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP27109P3/en)).
## Appearance and Use
The named selection is Ilex verticillata ‘NCIV1’. Its breeder lists a mature height and spread of 3–4 feet and recommends part sun to sun; the patent describes a compact, rounded shrub with abundant, large red fruit. Use it in borders, hedges, mass plantings, containers, or a rain garden. One male Little Goblin® Guy can pollinate up to five Little Goblin® Red and/or Orange plants when planted within 50 feet.
## Growing Conditions
Winterberry holly grows in moist, acidic soil and tolerates wet sites. Keep soil from drying, since dry conditions can reduce fruit set. Its deciduous habit leaves the red fruit visible in fall and winter, and the species supports songbirds and specialized bees.
## Maintenance
Keep pruning light because flowers form on old wood and regular shaping reduces flowering and fruit. In early spring, remove only old branches that have stopped producing vigorous growth; whole branches may be cut for seasonal arrangements.
