About Southern Fan Palm

The Australian fan palm, Livistona australis, is a solitary palm native to Australia. Its large, divided fan leaves top a tall, ringed trunk, and the leaf stalks have short, curved spines. Small white to pale-yellow flowers grow on long sprays between the leaves, followed by round fruits that change from red to dark brown or black as they mature. ## Garden Use Use this palm as a specimen where there is ample vertical and root space. The [Singapore NParks species profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/6/2648) lists a maximum height of 25 metres and describes its fan-shaped leaves, fruit, and insect-pollinated flowers. The palm is also known as Cabbage Palm and Australian Cabbage Palm. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and provide moderate water. In its native range, this palm grows in rainforest, swamp forest, coastal forest, and streamside habitats; it is best suited to warm climates. Leave clearance around the trunk and foliage, including for the spiny leaf stalks, and allow room for the crown to expand. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and monitor soil moisture during dry weather. Remove damaged or fully dead leaves carefully, taking care around the spiny stalks. Fallen fruit may need to be collected where the palm grows beside paths or patios.
